The Graston technique is a type of soft tissue therapy that uses specialized tools to break down scar tissue and fascial adhesions. Both of these are most commonly found in the body’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments due to either overuse or an injury. This type of instrument-assisted therapy is used to identify any areas of restriction and attempt to break up any scar tissue found. The Graston technique is typically used by experienced physical therapists, osteopathic physicians, occupational therapists, massage therapists, athletic trainers, including our Brooklyn chiropractor.

GRASTON TECHNIQUE TOOLS IN BROOKLYN

During the Graston Technique treatment, there are six main tools that are used by our physical and occupational therapists. Each of these tools is made of stainless steel and has either a concave or convex shape. The stainless steel Graston technique instruments are used to detect areas of injured fibrotic tissue. Another essential function of the Graston technique is identifying injured areas you may have and providing necessary treatment. Graston Technique Massage Specialists Our clinicians use a particular method with the stainless steel Graston technique tools for our clients. We use a cross-friction massage that goes against the grain of the scar tissue. The Graston technique specialist will then recreate trauma to the affected area to increase blood flow in and around the area to help to heal the affected soft tissues.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GRASTON TECHNIQUE?

It is typical that any physical therapy service’s main goal is to reduce the pain that the patient is experiencing. Another purpose that the Graston technique serves is to improve function in our patients. The first thing we want to accomplish using the Graston technique is to break down the scar tissue and fascia restrictions that were caused by trauma to the soft tissue. We will also reduce restrictions by stretching connective tissue to rearrange the soft tissue being treated. Graston technique will promote a better healing environment for the scar tissue that was initially injured. Benefits of Graston Technique There are a number of benefits to using the Graston technique as a physical and occupational therapy option for your pain:

  • Less overall time of rehabilitation
  • Decreased need for anti-inflammatory medication
  • Eliminates chronic conditions
  • Improves range of motion
